Why virtual reality is the next big thing

Virtual reality glasses such as the HTC Vive blank first time some of the potential of virtual reality. Games and movies so we could experience a completely new way in the future.
The HTC Vive heralds a new era VR.
The HTC Vive heralds a new era VR.

One thing I have to get rid times: The HTC Vive is for me the most impressive piece of technology that I have ever experienced. walk less than a week, crawl, jump and I stumble now through the virtual reality and the placement of glasses is for me always a highlight. What HTC and Valve have put on the legs with the Vive, is absolutely impressive. Were particularly surprised myself how well it works already. After all, the Vive is the first VR goggles ever, which enables movement in space.

  • The holodeck from "Star Trek" is here

Those like me who in the '90s with "Star Trek: The Next Generation" has grown up and the holodeck of the Enterprise, will be amazed at the benefits of HTC glasses that has become of science fiction now reality. If one has established his free space of up to 5 x 5 meters and puts on the glasses for the first time, you feel like actually on the holodeck. And just like on the Enterprise can then theoretically simulate any virtual reality.

What is there yet to actually see the Vive and Steam VR, has indeed still largely demo character. Nevertheless, this alone tech demos are so impressive that they give an idea of the true potential of VR glasses and even art itself. I could very well imagine spontaneously as a classic point and click adventure game in virtual reality. Actions such as "Use scissors with paper" I could run even with a virtual scissors and virtual paper actually.

  • VR glasses need a new kind of games

to be general, the games we gamble in the future with VR goggles, probably quite different from traditional shooters and RPGs. While it is an excellent shooting with the HTC Vive. But the movements, jumps and stunts that you normally perform in "Call of Duty", can be personalized with the Vive simply not implement. Here then the Motion Sickness would come into play, which always occurs when you want to move in a VR game, while actually standing still or sitting.

I think that although not so bad, because I want a VR goggles not in order to play this same stuff I already know anyway. A spectacle like the HTC Vive has potential because it enables completely new types of entertainment - and perhaps even outside of games. How about, for example, with virtual and interactive movies or visits to historical places? Imagine that there is the opportunity to walk with the Vive through the streets of ancient Rome or to visit the Port of Hamburg in the days of the Hanseatic League. I would want to try.

  • Pitfalls in Virtual Reality

Still there in literally certain pitfalls in the form of cables. In addition, the structure becomes quite cumbersome and of course glasses required as the Vive a whole lot of space. Nevertheless, the spectacle the holodeck from "Star Trek" comes close already doomed and I sincerely hope that HTC and Valve are rewarded for their courageous approach. And that, moreover, even more manufacturers and software developers will jump on the VR train.

Virtual Reality has in my opinion the potential the most interesting and important technology to be since the mobile Internet. VR could develop at the intersection of video games and movies to a completely new and independent media. It will be important that we get the right content for this type of medium. If we, the developers here not abandon, I'm pretty sure that VR is the next big thing. I expect it honestly barely.
